Article Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping various sectors in the 21st century, and librarianship is no exception. Libraries around the world are moving away from traditional manual systems and embracing technology-driven environments. In this new landscape, AI facilitates innovative knowledge discovery, personalized information services, and enhanced research support. In Nigeria, librarians play a crucial role in promoting literacy, education, and research, all of which are vital for national development. However, many libraries in the country face significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and a shortage of skilled personnel capable of leveraging emerging technologies. This opinion paper posits that AI presents both challenges and opportunities for Nigerian librarians as they seek to remain relevant in the digital economy. By applying modernization theory, it argues that the adoption of AI in Nigerian libraries can serve as a catalyst for growth in the knowledge economy, fostering innovation and sustainable national development. The paper explores the potential applications of AI in areas such as cataloguing, information retrieval, user services, and research support. It also addresses the challenges that come with these advancements, including infrastructural deficits, funding limitations, ethical considerations, and resistance to change. Furthermore, the implications for policy, training, and professional development are examined. The conclusion emphasizes the need for Nigerian librarians to view AI as a transformative tool rather than a threat to their profession. It advocates for a reimagining of libraries' roles as key players in education, innovation, and socio-economic development in the 21st century.
